What is service upgrades (single to three phase & amperage)?
A service upgrade increases the electrical capacity coming into your property. The two most common upgrades are converting from single phase to three phase power, and increasing the amperage of your existing supply. Both involve work on the consumer mains and the point of attachment, and both require a Level 2 ASP because the upgrade touches the network connection — not just your internal wiring.
Homeowners typically upgrade because modern loads have outgrown an older supply: ducted air conditioning, a pool or spa, an EV charger, a workshop, a granny flat, or a large solar and battery system. Three phase power spreads load across three circuits and is often required for ducted systems, EV fast chargers and larger solar inverters. An amperage increase (for example from 63A to 100A per phase) gives a single-phase home more headroom without the cost of going three phase. We assess your current and future load and recommend the most cost-effective option.
Castellano Electrical handles the full upgrade: confirming what your distributor will allow at your address, lodging the application with Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy, upgrading the consumer mains and point of attachment, and upgrading or replacing the switchboard and main switch to suit the new supply. Where the existing overhead service is undersized we replace it; where you are also converting to underground we coordinate both works together. You receive a compliant switchboard, correctly rated mains, and the certificates to prove it.
Why only a Level 2 ASP can do this work
Service Upgrades (Single to Three Phase & Amperage) is work on the network side of your electricity supply — the connection between the distributor's network and your meter. A standard electrician is licensed for the wiring inside your property, but only a Level 2 Authorised Service Provider (ASP) is authorised to connect, disconnect or alter that supply. If this work is done by a non-ASP, the distributor will not energise it and it has to be redone.
Castellano Electrical holds Level 2 ASP authorisation for both Ausgrid and Endeavour Energy, so we can carry out service upgrades (single to three phase & amperage) anywhere in Greater Sydney and manage the distributor process for you. You can read more about electrical licensing in NSW via NSW Fair Trading.
The process, step by step
- Load assessment. We assess your current and future load and recommend three-phase or an amperage increase.
- Distributor application. We confirm what is available at your address and lodge the upgrade application.
- Upgrade mains & POA. We install upgraded consumer mains and a compliant point of attachment.
- Switchboard upgrade. We upgrade the switchboard and main switch to suit the new supply capacity.
- Certify. We test, energise and issue your electrical safety certificate.
Key benefits
- Single-phase to three-phase conversion for high-demand loads
- Amperage increases to support EV charging, A/C, pools and solar
- Correctly rated consumer mains and point of attachment
- Switchboard and main switch upgraded to current standards
- Distributor application and approval handled end to end
Distributor coverage & service areas
We provide service upgrades (single to three phase & amperage) across both Sydney network areas. Your property's distributor determines the application process and standards, and we are authorised for both:
- Ausgrid: Ausgrid operates the electricity network across the Sydney CBD, eastern suburbs, inner west, lower and upper north shore, northern beaches, the Central Coast and the Hunter.
- Endeavour Energy: Endeavour Energy operates the network across Greater Western Sydney, the South West, the Blue Mountains, the Southern Highlands and the Illawarra.
Not sure which network covers you? Our Ausgrid vs Endeavour Energy service areas guide breaks it down suburb by suburb, or see all the Sydney areas we cover.
What does it cost?
Upgrade cost depends on whether you go three phase or increase amperage, mains length and switchboard condition. Firm quote provided after assessment.
