New Service Connections in Sydney

Connecting a property to the electricity network for the first time — new homes, granny flats, subdivisions and vacant land.

What is new service connections?

A new service connection is the work of physically connecting a property to the electricity network for the first time. It is required for a newly built home, a granny flat or secondary dwelling, a freshly subdivided lot, or any vacant land being developed. Because this work happens on the network side of the meter — the point where your private wiring meets the distributor’s mains — it can only legally be carried out by a Level 2 ASP electrician authorised by your network distributor.

Castellano Electrical manages the entire new-connection process. We confirm whether your property falls under Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy, design the connection to the correct standard, submit the connection application and any required notifications, and install the consumer mains, point of attachment and metering. For overhead connections we install the aerial service and point of attachment; for underground connections we run the consumer mains in conduit from the network pillar or pit to your switchboard.

Getting the connection type and load right from the start saves expensive rework later. We size your consumer mains for the load you actually need — including allowance for future solar, an EV charger or a pool — and make sure your switchboard and main switch comply with current AS/NZS 3000 requirements. Once the work is complete we arrange the meter installation with your retailer’s metering provider and supply the electrical safety certificate so your power can be energised without delay.

Why only a Level 2 ASP can do this work

New Service Connections is work on the network side of your electricity supply — the connection between the distributor's network and your meter. A standard electrician is licensed for the wiring inside your property, but only a Level 2 Authorised Service Provider (ASP) is authorised to connect, disconnect or alter that supply. If this work is done by a non-ASP, the distributor will not energise it and it has to be redone.

Castellano Electrical holds Level 2 ASP authorisation for both Ausgrid and Endeavour Energy, so we can carry out new service connections anywhere in Greater Sydney and manage the distributor process for you. You can read more about electrical licensing in NSW via NSW Fair Trading.

The process, step by step

  1. Site assessment & quote. We confirm your distributor, assess the supply route and load requirement, and provide a written quote.
  2. Connection application. We prepare and lodge the connection application and technical details with Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy.
  3. Install consumer mains & POA. We install the consumer mains, point of attachment and switchboard provisions to standard.
  4. Metering coordination. We coordinate with the metering provider so the meter is fitted and the supply energised.
  5. Certify & hand over. We issue the electrical safety certificate and confirm your connection is live and compliant.

Key benefits

  • End-to-end handling of the Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy connection application
  • Correctly sized consumer mains for current and future load
  • Overhead or underground point of attachment installed to standard
  • Coordination with your meter provider so energisation isn’t delayed
  • Compliance certificate and documentation supplied on completion

Distributor coverage & service areas

We provide new service connections across both Sydney network areas. Your property's distributor determines the application process and standards, and we are authorised for both:

  • Ausgrid: Ausgrid operates the electricity network across the Sydney CBD, eastern suburbs, inner west, lower and upper north shore, northern beaches, the Central Coast and the Hunter.
  • Endeavour Energy: Endeavour Energy operates the network across Greater Western Sydney, the South West, the Blue Mountains, the Southern Highlands and the Illawarra.

Not sure which network covers you? Our Ausgrid vs Endeavour Energy service areas guide breaks it down suburb by suburb, or see all the Sydney areas we cover.

What does it cost?

New connection cost depends on overhead vs underground, distance to the network and load size. We provide a firm written quote after assessing the site.

New Service Connections: your questions answered

What is a new service connection?

It is the work of connecting a property to the electricity network for the first time — installing the consumer mains, point of attachment and metering provisions, and arranging energisation. It applies to new homes, granny flats, subdivided lots and vacant land being developed.

Why do I need a Level 2 ASP rather than a regular electrician?

A standard (Level 1) electrician is licensed to work on the wiring inside your property, but only a Level 2 Authorised Service Provider (ASP) is authorised by the network distributor to work on the connection between the network and your meter. That includes connections, disconnections, the consumer mains, the point of attachment and metering. Using a non-ASP for this work is illegal and the distributor will not energise it.

How long does a new connection take?

The physical work is often completed in a day or two, but the overall timeline depends on the distributor’s application and approval process and the meter installation by your retailer’s provider. We give you a realistic timeline up front and manage the application to avoid delays.

What approvals are needed for a new connection?

A connection application must be lodged with your distributor (Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy), and the meter is arranged through your electricity retailer’s accredited metering provider. We handle the connection application and coordinate the metering for you.

Should I choose an overhead or underground connection?

It depends on the network connection point, your site and your budget. Underground gives a cleaner result and better storm resilience but costs more due to trenching; overhead is cheaper and faster. We advise the best option for your property.

What size supply should my new home have?

We size the consumer mains for your present and likely future load — allowing for air conditioning, solar, a battery or an EV charger — so you do not pay to upgrade again soon. Many new homes benefit from three-phase supply.

How much does a new connection cost?

Cost depends on overhead versus underground, the distance to the network connection point and the supply size. We provide a firm written quote after assessing the site.

Do you handle the meter as well?

We complete all the Level 2 ASP work and coordinate with the metering provider who installs the meter, so the supply can be energised without you having to chase separate parties.
