What is metering equipment installation & relocation?
Metering work covers the installation, upgrade and relocation of your meter box and the supply-side equipment around it. While the smart meter itself is installed by your retailer’s accredited metering provider, the Level 2 ASP work is everything that makes that possible: installing or upgrading the meter panel, relocating the meter box, preparing the board for a smart meter, and any consumer-mains or point-of-attachment work the relocation requires.
Homeowners need metering work when an old meter box is full, corroded or non-compliant, when a renovation or extension means the meter box has to move, when a switchboard upgrade requires a new meter panel, or when adding solar or a second dwelling that needs its own metering. A meter relocation in particular is more involved than it looks: moving the meter usually means re-routing the consumer mains and re-establishing the point of attachment, all of which is ASP work.
Castellano Electrical installs and relocates meter boxes to current standards, prepares boards for smart meter exchange, and coordinates with the metering provider so the new meter goes in without delay. We make sure the meter position meets the distributor’s access and clearance requirements, the enclosure is correctly rated, and any associated mains or point-of-attachment changes are completed and certified at the same time. The result is a tidy, compliant, future-ready metering setup.
Why only a Level 2 ASP can do this work
Metering Equipment Installation & Relocation is work on the network side of your electricity supply — the connection between the distributor's network and your meter. A standard electrician is licensed for the wiring inside your property, but only a Level 2 Authorised Service Provider (ASP) is authorised to connect, disconnect or alter that supply. If this work is done by a non-ASP, the distributor will not energise it and it has to be redone.
Castellano Electrical holds Level 2 ASP authorisation for both Ausgrid and Endeavour Energy, so we can carry out metering equipment installation & relocation anywhere in Greater Sydney and manage the distributor process for you. You can read more about electrical licensing in NSW via NSW Fair Trading.
The process, step by step
- Assess metering needs. We review your meter box condition, position and what your project requires.
- Plan relocation/upgrade. We plan the new position, panel and any mains or POA changes.
- Install & re-route. We install the meter panel and re-route consumer mains and the point of attachment as needed.
- Provider coordination. We coordinate the smart meter fit with your metering provider.
- Certify. We test, energise and issue compliance documentation.

Distributor coverage & service areas
We provide metering equipment installation & relocation across both Sydney network areas. Your property's distributor determines the application process and standards, and we are authorised for both:
- Ausgrid: Ausgrid operates the electricity network across the Sydney CBD, eastern suburbs, inner west, lower and upper north shore, northern beaches, the Central Coast and the Hunter.
- Endeavour Energy: Endeavour Energy operates the network across Greater Western Sydney, the South West, the Blue Mountains, the Southern Highlands and the Illawarra.
Not sure which network covers you? Our Ausgrid vs Endeavour Energy service areas guide breaks it down suburb by suburb, or see all the Sydney areas we cover.
What does it cost?
Metering cost depends on whether it is a simple panel upgrade or a full relocation with mains re-routing. Quoted after assessment.
