Consumer Mains Repair & Replacement in Sydney

Repairing or replacing the cable that runs from the network to your switchboard — the most common cause of undersized or failing supply.

What is consumer mains repair & replacement?

The consumer mains are the cables that carry power from the network point of attachment (overhead or underground) to the main switch in your switchboard. They are the backbone of your supply, and when they are undersized, damaged or perished they cause voltage drop, nuisance tripping, overheating and, in older homes, a genuine fire risk. Replacing or upgrading consumer mains is Level 2 ASP work because the cable originates at the network connection.

Consumer mains commonly need attention in older homes where the original cable is too small for modern loads, where decades of sun and weather have perished the insulation, or where a previous overhead-to-underground change left a substandard run. You may notice flickering lights, warm or discoloured switchboard connections, or breakers tripping under load. During a switchboard upgrade or service upgrade, replacing the consumer mains is often required to carry the new capacity safely.

Castellano Electrical assesses your existing mains, confirms the correct cable size for your present and future load, and replaces the run from the point of attachment to the switchboard in compliant cable and conduit. Where the mains form part of a wider upgrade — three phase conversion, amperage increase, switchboard replacement or underground conversion — we plan the works together so you pay for one coordinated job rather than several visits. Every replacement is tested, certified and documented.

Why only a Level 2 ASP can do this work

Consumer Mains Repair & Replacement is work on the network side of your electricity supply — the connection between the distributor's network and your meter. A standard electrician is licensed for the wiring inside your property, but only a Level 2 Authorised Service Provider (ASP) is authorised to connect, disconnect or alter that supply. If this work is done by a non-ASP, the distributor will not energise it and it has to be redone.

Castellano Electrical holds Level 2 ASP authorisation for both Ausgrid and Endeavour Energy, so we can carry out consumer mains repair & replacement anywhere in Greater Sydney and manage the distributor process for you. You can read more about electrical licensing in NSW via NSW Fair Trading.

The process, step by step

  1. Assess existing mains. We inspect the cable size, condition and route from point of attachment to switchboard.
  2. Size the replacement. We calculate the correct cable size for your current and future load.
  3. Replace the run. We install new consumer mains in compliant cable and conduit.
  4. Terminate & test. We terminate at the switchboard, test the installation and energise.
  5. Certify. We issue your electrical safety certificate.

Key benefits

  • Correctly sized mains for present and future load
  • Eliminates voltage drop, nuisance tripping and overheating
  • Addresses perished insulation and fire risk in older homes
  • Coordinated with switchboard or service upgrades
  • Tested, certified and documented on completion

Distributor coverage & service areas

We provide consumer mains repair & replacement across both Sydney network areas. Your property's distributor determines the application process and standards, and we are authorised for both:

  • Ausgrid: Ausgrid operates the electricity network across the Sydney CBD, eastern suburbs, inner west, lower and upper north shore, northern beaches, the Central Coast and the Hunter.
  • Endeavour Energy: Endeavour Energy operates the network across Greater Western Sydney, the South West, the Blue Mountains, the Southern Highlands and the Illawarra.

What does it cost?

Consumer mains cost depends on cable size, length and access. Usually quoted alongside a switchboard or service upgrade.

Consumer Mains Repair & Replacement: your questions answered

What are consumer mains?

Consumer mains are the cables carrying power from the network point of attachment to the main switch in your switchboard. They are the backbone of your supply, and replacing them is Level 2 ASP work because they originate at the network connection.

How do I know if my consumer mains need replacing?

Signs include flickering lights, breakers tripping under load, warm or discoloured switchboard connections, and perished cable insulation. Older homes often have undersized mains that cannot carry modern loads safely.

Why is this Level 2 ASP work?

A standard (Level 1) electrician is licensed to work on the wiring inside your property, but only a Level 2 Authorised Service Provider (ASP) is authorised by the network distributor to work on the connection between the network and your meter. That includes connections, disconnections, the consumer mains, the point of attachment and metering. Using a non-ASP for this work is illegal and the distributor will not energise it.

What size consumer mains do I need?

We calculate the correct size for your present and future load — allowing for air conditioning, solar, a battery or an EV charger — so the mains are not a bottleneck and you avoid upgrading again soon.

Is replacing consumer mains usually part of a bigger job?

Often yes. Consumer mains are commonly replaced as part of a switchboard upgrade, a service (three-phase or amperage) upgrade, or an overhead-to-underground conversion. We coordinate the works so it is one efficient job.

Will the power be off while you replace the mains?

There is a planned outage while we change over the mains and re-terminate at the switchboard. We keep it as short as possible and schedule it to suit you.

Are old, undersized mains a fire risk?

Undersized or perished mains can overheat under load, which is a recognised fire risk in older homes. Replacing them removes the hazard and brings the supply up to current standards.

How much does it cost to replace consumer mains?

Cost depends on the cable size, the length of the run and access. It is usually quoted alongside a switchboard or service upgrade.
