Overhead Service Installation & Repair in Sydney

Installing, repairing or replacing aerial consumer mains and the point of attachment — including storm and age-related damage.

What is overhead service installation & repair?

Your overhead service is the aerial cable that runs from the network pole to the point of attachment on your home, and then down to your meter as the consumer mains. Over time these aerial lines deteriorate: insulation perishes, the point of attachment loosens or rusts, the bracket pulls away from the fascia, or a storm or falling branch brings the line down. Repairing or replacing an overhead service is Level 2 ASP work because it connects to the network.

Common overhead service problems we attend to include a sagging or low service line, a service that has detached from the house, a corroded or undersized point of attachment, frayed or sun-perished aerial cable, and storm damage where a branch or impact has torn the line away. A low or damaged service line is a genuine safety hazard and frequently an emergency — if your overhead line is down or arcing, keep clear and call our 24/7 line immediately.

Castellano Electrical installs new overhead services for properties that retain aerial supply, replaces deteriorated consumer mains and points of attachment, and repairs storm damage to restore power safely. Where the existing point of attachment no longer meets clearance requirements over a driveway or yard, we relocate or raise it to comply. For properties wanting to remove aerial lines altogether, we also offer overhead-to-underground conversion. All overhead work is completed to network standards and certified.

Why only a Level 2 ASP can do this work

Overhead Service Installation & Repair is work on the network side of your electricity supply — the connection between the distributor's network and your meter. A standard electrician is licensed for the wiring inside your property, but only a Level 2 Authorised Service Provider (ASP) is authorised to connect, disconnect or alter that supply. If this work is done by a non-ASP, the distributor will not energise it and it has to be redone.

Castellano Electrical holds Level 2 ASP authorisation for both Ausgrid and Endeavour Energy, so we can carry out overhead service installation & repair anywhere in Greater Sydney and manage the distributor process for you. You can read more about electrical licensing in NSW via NSW Fair Trading.

The process, step by step

  1. Inspect the service. We assess the aerial line, point of attachment and consumer mains for damage and compliance.
  2. Make safe if needed. If the line is down or hazardous we isolate and make the site safe immediately.
  3. Repair or replace. We replace the aerial consumer mains and/or point of attachment to network standard.
  4. Restore clearances. We relocate or raise the point of attachment where clearances are deficient.
  5. Energise & certify. We restore supply, test and issue your compliance certificate.

Key benefits

  • Repair or replacement of deteriorated aerial consumer mains
  • New or relocated point of attachment to meet clearance rules
  • Storm and impact damage restored safely (24/7 available)
  • Sagging, detached and low service lines corrected
  • Option to convert to underground at the same time

Distributor coverage & service areas

We provide overhead service installation & repair across both Sydney network areas. Your property's distributor determines the application process and standards, and we are authorised for both:

  • Ausgrid: Ausgrid operates the electricity network across the Sydney CBD, eastern suburbs, inner west, lower and upper north shore, northern beaches, the Central Coast and the Hunter.
  • Endeavour Energy: Endeavour Energy operates the network across Greater Western Sydney, the South West, the Blue Mountains, the Southern Highlands and the Illawarra.

What does it cost?

Overhead repair cost depends on the extent of damage and whether the point of attachment must be relocated. Emergency repairs quoted on attendance.

Overhead Service Installation & Repair: your questions answered

What is the overhead service and consumer mains?

The overhead service is the aerial cable from the network pole to the point of attachment on your home; the consumer mains then run to your meter. Repairing or replacing either is Level 2 ASP work because it connects to the network.

My power line is sagging low over the driveway — is that dangerous?

Yes. A low or sagging service line can be a serious hazard, especially over a driveway or yard where vehicles or people pass. It needs to be raised or the point of attachment relocated to meet clearance requirements — call us to assess it, or our 24/7 line if it is down.

Why can’t a normal electrician repair my service line?

A standard (Level 1) electrician is licensed to work on the wiring inside your property, but only a Level 2 Authorised Service Provider (ASP) is authorised by the network distributor to work on the connection between the network and your meter. That includes connections, disconnections, the consumer mains, the point of attachment and metering. Using a non-ASP for this work is illegal and the distributor will not energise it.

What causes an overhead service to fail?

Age and weather perish the insulation, the point of attachment rusts or pulls away from the fascia, and storms or falling branches tear the line down. Salt air near the coast accelerates corrosion.

Can you repair storm damage to my service after hours?

Yes. Storm and impact damage to an overhead service is a common emergency, and our 24/7 team can make the site safe and restore supply day or night.

Should I repair the overhead service or convert to underground?

If the service is failing anyway, it can be a good time to convert to underground for storm resilience and appearance. We can quote both options so you can compare.

How long does an overhead repair take?

Most overhead repairs and point-of-attachment replacements are completed in a single visit. We restore supply, test the work and certify it the same day where possible.

How much does overhead service repair cost?

It depends on the extent of the damage and whether the point of attachment must be relocated or raised. Emergency repairs are quoted on attendance before work begins.
