What is service disconnections?
A service disconnection is the controlled removal or isolation of your property’s connection to the electricity network. It is required before a demolition, at the start of major renovations that affect the switchboard or service, when an old overhead service is being removed, or when a property is being prepared for sale or redevelopment. Like all network-side work, a disconnection must be carried out by a Level 2 ASP — an ordinary electrician cannot legally touch the service between the network and your meter.
Disconnections come in two forms. A temporary disconnection (sometimes called an abolishment-and-reconnect) isolates the supply while work is carried out and is later reconnected. A permanent disconnection, or service abolishment, removes the connection entirely — typically before demolition. We assess which you need, notify your distributor, and carry out the disconnection safely at the point of attachment, removing the service cable where required and making the site safe for the trades that follow.
Timing matters on a disconnection, especially when a demolisher or builder is booked. Castellano Electrical coordinates the disconnection to suit your program, lodges the abolishment or disconnection request with Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy, and where you will need power again, we plan the reconnection or temporary builders supply at the same time so your project keeps moving. All work is documented for your records, your distributor and your insurer.
Why only a Level 2 ASP can do this work
Service Disconnections is work on the network side of your electricity supply — the connection between the distributor's network and your meter. A standard electrician is licensed for the wiring inside your property, but only a Level 2 Authorised Service Provider (ASP) is authorised to connect, disconnect or alter that supply. If this work is done by a non-ASP, the distributor will not energise it and it has to be redone.
Castellano Electrical holds Level 2 ASP authorisation for both Ausgrid and Endeavour Energy, so we can carry out service disconnections anywhere in Greater Sydney and manage the distributor process for you. You can read more about electrical licensing in NSW via NSW Fair Trading.
The process, step by step
- Confirm scope. We determine whether you need a temporary disconnection or a permanent abolishment and your timing.
- Notify distributor. We lodge the disconnection or abolishment request with Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy.
- Isolate safely. We disconnect the supply at the point of attachment and make the site safe.
- Remove service. Where required we remove the aerial or underground service cable and point of attachment.
- Document. We provide written confirmation of the disconnection for your records and insurer.
Key benefits
- Safe isolation or removal of the service at the point of attachment
- Temporary (reconnectable) or permanent abolishment as required
- Disconnection scheduled to suit your demolition or build program
- Distributor abolishment/disconnection requests lodged for you
- Reconnection or temporary supply planned at the same time
Distributor coverage & service areas
We provide service disconnections across both Sydney network areas. Your property's distributor determines the application process and standards, and we are authorised for both:
- Ausgrid: Ausgrid operates the electricity network across the Sydney CBD, eastern suburbs, inner west, lower and upper north shore, northern beaches, the Central Coast and the Hunter.
- Endeavour Energy: Endeavour Energy operates the network across Greater Western Sydney, the South West, the Blue Mountains, the Southern Highlands and the Illawarra.
Not sure which network covers you? Our Ausgrid vs Endeavour Energy service areas guide breaks it down suburb by suburb, or see all the Sydney areas we cover.
What does it cost?
Disconnection cost depends on overhead vs underground service and whether it is temporary or permanent. Quoted up front after a quick assessment.
